I Hope Every Person In Victory LB Would Make Disciples Remembering This. Part 1

AUGUST-SEPTEMBER, 2018
It’s harvest time in UPLB and we are excited.
The church initiated and participated in lots (nine to be exact) of outreach events.
Now the dust is settling and we are seeing the result of the momentum created by these outreach events more and more: people are getting to know Jesus through one-on-one and small group discipleship setups.
I can’t be more excited!

But I’m also very concerned.
I don’t want the harvest to fall on rocky places or shallow soils, wither due to failure to grow roots, or get choked by other competing things (Read Parable of the Sower in Mark 4:1-20).

That is why, I hope and pray that everyone in Victory LB to remember these three things this harvest season:
  1. Discipleship Is Relationship
  2. Every Member Is A Minister
  3. Lead with the Idea of Leaving
Let me expound on the first one here.
DISCIPLESHIP IS RELATIONSHIP

We’ve heard this in Victory circles again and again. In fact, it has probably become one of the catchphrases of our movement.
But sometimes it’s what we know the most that end up losing its meaning.
'Discipleship Is Relationship' simply means relationships make discipleship really effective.
It really does!
However, 'relationship' is not to be viewed merely as a tool, it is not just a means to an end.
Relationship is the foundation in which discipleship is built on and the framework in which we build spiritual growth in.
Relationship is what makes discipleship fulfilling, life-giving and worthwhile.
Relationship is God’s ordained habitat in which discipleship can flourish in.

However, relationships cannot be forced.
It has to grow organically from the environment we intentionally build for it.
We can’t grow relationships (That is God’s part - 1 Cor 3:7), but we can nurture it.
We cannot give birth to relationships, but we can only build on it.
Here’s a practical way to build on relationships

B - be there for them - (Take note that the prerequisite to all of these is to be a disciple, you cant make disciples unless you are a disciple of Christ.)
U - help them do a U-turn (180 degrees). Before their life was heading away from Jesus, now let us help them experience a U-turn (to Jesus) in every aspect of their lives.
I - instruct them. Teach them to obey everything (not just some) that Jesus commanded (not our preferences but Jesus’ commands)
L - love them - It doesn’t matter what we know. What matters is how much we care for them. “People don’t care about what we know until they know how much we care” -J.Maxwell
D - teach them to do the same for others. Don’t wait for maturity before empowering people to do ministry, instead empower people to do ministry and we will see them grow into maturity.

Remember, people are not trophies, they are not projects, they are not entries to the next Victory Weekend, they are souls that Jesus died for. Therefore it is one of the greatest privileges to have them become part of our lives as fellow heirs in God’s Kingdom.

Have fun making disciples!

So you've sinned. Again.

Art Resource, NY. Caption: Cain After Having Killed His Brother Abel. Vidal Henri, 1896. O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. Psalms 6:1,2 David’s prayer in this OT Psalm has become our security as believers today. Through Christ's death and resurrection 2000 years ago, we were brought from darkness into light; from death into life; from being outsiders to sons of God, equal with Him as far as righteousness is concerned and forever loved. Can you believe it? Because if you can, it's yours. This is the new covenant God made with us through Christ. Through it, He has made us sons of God through Christ in whom He will never get angry with but will always be gracious to and has promised healing to be made available for us. Ain’t that great?! If we are in Christ, our identity is no longer 'sinners' but sons of God. Let this

The Best Rebuke

Psalms 6:1 O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger,  From whatever angle you look at it, a rebuke that comes not from anger but from love is the best! It's the rebuke that you can trust. It's the rebuke that you can receive. nor discipline me in your wrath. Discipline, when given in wrath, gives the notion that the one giving it is against you.  That it is not just what you did but it is your person that is hated - that's what crushes hearts and spirits. It's not really discipline but rejection.
